Without any new episodes in the pipelines (and no room on FOX's schedule), Lie to Me's third season will end with 13 episodes. While it's a possibility Lie to Me become a summer show, I don't really see it happening. If Lie to Me is not renewed, I don't think I'll be heartbroken. I find myself not caring what happens to the characters, and I'm annoyed with Lightman's senseless antics more and more.
"Funhouse" is amusing for a short while, but comes up severely short. Lightman's hallucinations don't go anywhere and, the plot resolves itself with a flat, disaffected climax. "Rebound" isn't notable either, taking a generic setup, a creep who marries women for their money, and doing nothing with it. The guy is fingered from the beginning, interrogated halfway through the episode to confirm guilt, and caught at the end of the episode for a slam-dunk conviction with help of the jilted women.

Lie To Me 3.11 “Saved” Review | Cytat: | I have a sneaking suspicion that the impetus of tonight’s Lie To Me was the tragic death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart; at least, it’s the first thing I think of when the District Attorney brings Cal footage of a car accident in which a successful rookie pitcher is killed and three guys are joyriding in the car that hit him. However, that’s just the start of his investigation, which leads him to a paramedic named Ilene (Annabeth Gish, Brotherhood), whom he quickly pegs as an adrenaline junkie. By the end of the first act, he finds himself in an eerily similar car accident, and Ilene just so happens to be there within moments. Is she saving people, or doing more harm than good?
“Saved” weaves an interesting web consisting of Ilene’s tragic past and the psychological impact it has on her present. The plot moves at a fairly steady pace, showing us how one incident in her past affects how she thinks now, and what it did to the life of her brother. There’s even a little caveat before the final act which turns the brother into more than just a victim. It’s not the most complex of episodes, but for people like me who enjoy character studies, it’s an entertaining hour that really digs in. All the pieces fall together, one by one, and it all makes sense in the end.
As someone who’s had almost a dozen concussions, I had to laugh at seeing Cal up and about after suffering one of his own. It’s definitely not recommended behavior, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t tried to do the same, so I can understand it perfectly. That aside, there’s a minimum of “Cal being Cal” behavior here, allowing the episode to focus more on its plot than his actions to decode it. The episode proves that the show doesn’t need to rely on Tim Roth doing something outrageous to work; it can stand on its own with more than that.
Then there’s the acting. I have to admit that I despised Annabeth Gish while she was on The X-Files, and that my strong dislike of both her character and her performance on that series has tinged my feelings for everything she’s done since. That being said, her acting here is reliable and doesn’t disintegrate into histrionics where it could. It’s also fun to see Emily and, to a lesser extent, Gillian trying to take care of a still-stubborn Cal. All the performances are fairly subdued here, giving the writing a chance to shine through. It’s episodes like this which show why Lie To Me recently won a People’s Choice Award. When it gets away from needing something outrageous to happen, it can be a well-written, solidly acted series. Here’s to hoping it continues the trend with the final two episodes left in season three. |

To say that the flirty overtones launched fans into a tizzy is putting it mildly. Even series star Kelli Williams got a kick out of it.
“I know!” the actress remarked to TVLine when we inquired about the exchange. “We do enjoy teasing each other that way.”
Well yes, but is it simply teasing? Or might Gillian have blurted out a bit of truth as to how she kept Cal (played by Tim Roth) at arm’s length after the end of her last relationship?
“Possibly…,” Williams allows with a big smile. “I think they joke around a lot, and yet there’s truth within those jokes.”
Williams said that the delicious dialogue “might” be planting a seed for the future, but as with many an actor deposited into one of TV’s “Will They?/Won’t They?” dynamics, she questions the long-term entertainment value of happily ever after.
“Let’s say they do love each other, and that comes to fruition. Well, then what?” she asks. “Then they have a regular relationship? Do we watch television for regular relationships?”
Whatever the writers’ agenda is, Williams knows one thing for sure: “It’s certainly fun to play those scenes with Tim!” |
