LIE TO ME 3.09 “Funhouse” Advance Review

Lightman (Tim Roth, C) is escorted into a mental hospital
The two hour Lie to Me special is spectacular! It reminds me of all the reasons I fell in love with the show. There are plot twists I don’t see coming, flirty banter between Lightman (Tim Roth) and Foster (Kelli Williams), clever writing, and if that isn’t enough, Foster looks amazing in the tennis outfit she sports to attract a suspect!
The first hour of fun begins with the aptly titled “Funhouse.” Amanda (Alexa Nikolas), a friend of Emily’s (Hayley McFarland), seeks Lightman’s help to figure out if the mental hospital her father is in is really helping. Lightman takes a little vacation from sanity and hallucinates conversations with his deceased parents while trying to find the truth about Amanda’s father. It shows a sweet and gentle side to Lightman that we rarely get to see because he’s usually so full of bravado.
The actress who plays Lightman’s mother (Paula Malcolmson) is very good. Her scenes are so touching and really make me wish Lightman could find some closure with his mother’s suicide. “Funhouse” may have gotten him off to a good start by helping him realize he isn’t to blame for her suicide, nor could he have done anything to prevent it. I think his hallucinations can finally help him move on and stop comparing every suicide case that comes to The Lightman Group to his mother’s.

This is one of those episodes where I think I know who the culprit is until the very end, and then I realize I am very wrong. I love it when things are unpredictable and keep me guessing. It makes watching an episode so much more interesting. Some of the characters are written and acted so sinisterly that I was sure I knew how the episode would end. After two and a half years watching Lie to Me, I feel I should be so much better at figuring out the culprits.
The dialogue is, at times, witty, smart, funny, sad, and sweet. It covers so many emotions in 44 minutes, I find myself in awe of the writers. Lightman, especially, pulls my feelings in so many different directions over the course of this episode that I am floored by Roth’s acting ability. I laugh when he shamelessly flirts with Foster, I’m sad when he “speaks” to his mother, I’m angry toward his father (Enzo Cilenti) on his behalf and I feel a fondness for him because he goes so far out of his way to help his daughter’s friend. It is inspirational.
Loker (Brendan Hines) and Torres (Monica Raymund) don’t have a lot to do in this episode, but what little they do is done wonderfully. Hines and Raymund are great actors and I often wish they had more scenes to showcase their abilities. But then I realize that would detract from the number of Lightman/Foster scenes, and I change my mind.

I love the way Lightman and Foster interact in “Funhouse.” They get along so well and can joke around and flirt while still solving crimes. When Lightman does something crazy, Foster is always there to pick up the pieces. They read each other and know when to push and when to let things go. Not to mention the incredible chemistry they have. I keep wishing the writers would give us some romance between the two but I will probably go into shock if it ever happens.
Hopefully, FOX will make up its mind about Lie to Me soon. The show’s adoring fans have started “Save Lie to Me” campaigns which include videos, emails, tweets, and snail mail sent to the executives at FOX, but so far, it hasn’t helped the show’s survival chances. FOX recently announced it would not be picking up the back nine episodes for season three, but they didn’t rule out the possibility of a season four. I imagine they’re waiting to see how some of their new mid-season shows do in the ratings, but I would be much happier if I didn’t have to wait much longer to find out the Lie to Me’s destiny, especially if its destiny is a fourth season. |
